Milk is considered an essential source of protein, iron and calcium, so is it good for our health??
The Truth is that Milk is not a very good source of vitamins. Manganese, Chromium, selenium and magnesium are all found in much Higher levels in fruit and vegetables.
The most important are magnesium and calcium, the ideal ratio is 2:1, we need twice as much calcium as we do magnesium and guess what? Milk’s ration is 10:1 so if you relying on milk for calcium it is likely you will be magnesium deficient!
Milk is designed for calves and not for humans!
Milk is not at all recommended for babies, there is a common myth that breastfeeding mothers should drink milk in order to make milk, off course this is total nonsense!
The issue is mothers who won’t or can’t breastfeed for whatever reason actually feed their babies cow’s milk and as I have already mentioned cow’s milk is not designed for humans, on the other hand human milk from breastfeeding contains a load of goodness, it contains protein, calcium, phosphorus, iron and essential fatty acids.
So we have gathered that breast feeding is a whole lot better than feeding babies cow’s milk, a little fact is that breast fed babies on average have 4 points higher IQ levels and this can be increased even more by giving the mother omega 3 fish oils.
Milk is strongly linked to increased risk of heart disease, breast and prostate cancer.
A candidate for why milk increases heart disease is its poor calcium to magnesium ratio as I mentioned earlier, more than any mineral, magnesium protects against heart disease.
Our bodies actually produce an antibody when we drink milk, which suggests this is not an ideal food to consume!
Breast and prostate cells are stimulated to grow by hormonal messages, these cells go into overgrowth when exposed to too much estrogen, one of the main causes of this is IGF-1 (insulin growth factor). IGF-1 is very rich in milk because cows have been selectively reared to produce milk during pregnancy, this milk is especially rich in estrogen, and this makes estrogen more potent in the body and can increase the risk of cancer!
So if this is not enough to put you off consuming milk or milk products then I suggest you at least choose to consume organic produce, which is safer and reduces the exposure to pesticides and herbicides.
This information is from a book called The Optimum Nutrition Bible and this is just a snippet of what the book talks about, for more information on this matter I suggest you purchase this fantastic book.
