To Much To Soon.

Today is all about too much too soon.

I had a friend ask me for some advice in weight loss last week so we were having a chat and she was frantically taking notes hoping to take in as much information as possible.

Now this friend hasn’t trained or exercises in any shape or form for at least 10 years, her nutrition has never been accounted for and she’s gained a lot of weight over this time.

She is now in a desperate state to lose this weight for a healthier future (great mindset). However when we were talking she was then asking what she should eat for, breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks – then what about exercise, then what about yoga and so on.

All I recommended her to do in the first instance is wake up in the morning, go downstairs and have a glass of lemon water. That was the only change I wanted her to make for the initial phase. Sounds crazy hey? BUT, what this lady was doing was waking up and first thing having a strong coffee with milk, and grabbing two or three belvita breakfast biscuits.

Then not consuming anything until lunch time which consisted of a sandwich and a pack of crisps. She mentioned that she couldn’t have a sandwich without a pack of crisps and therefore to keep calories down, made the conscious swap from Walkers to Quavers as they were less in calories. This told me that she was a creature of habit and had formed a habit of having that pack of crisps with a sandwich. By merely implementing a small habit change of a glass of lemon water first thing I can see whether or not she can stick to this habit before changing anything else.

How many times have you started something merely to quit because you haven’t seen results quick enough? It’s because you haven’t stuck with it. You’ve gone from not having any insight into your nutrition and eating what you want, not exercising and getting into a desperate state of wanting to change. You then say “I’m going to ditch the crap food and join a gym and go 5 times a week plus two long walks every day”. Too much in one go, you’re actually setting yourself up to fail at the first hurdle.

Smaller steps win in the long run and you’ll enjoy the journey as you will consistently see positive changes in every aspect of your life. Those small changes will motivate you to carry on, being consistent for a long time. And we all know what consistency means!

Hope that gives you a bit of an insight into why we don’t make massive changes all at once.
