A healthy gut will comprise up to 1kg of beneficial bacteria. They feed on indigestible fibres and in doing so provide energy along with immune compounds and a healthy intestinal environment.
A lot of people nowdays suffer with the very common symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome, diarrhoea, bloating, etc.... This is due to a poor diet or an incomplete breakdown of food which leads to dysbiosis, proliferation of BAD bacteria!
So why do we need to THINK about probiotics?? Well since becomeing a coach I see more and more people with gut issues and probiotics can go along way to help restore beneficial bacteria along with a good quality meal plan and maybe a food elimination process.
Below are a few benefits we can expect by supplementing with probiotics:
Digestive Function
Lactobacilli bacteria have the capacity to break down proteins and fats into their component parts, as well as lactose, the sugar found in dairy products, this can be especially helpfull in people who suffer from lactose intolerance.
Anti-Microbial
Through the fermentation of fibre in the gut probiotics are able to produce various organic acids, these acids have the effect of reducing the pH (increasing acidity) of the intestines and as such make the environment undesirable for resident and non resident bacteria, parasites and yeasts. In addition probiotiocs produce hydrogen peroxide, a potent antibiotic substance that further prevents the proliferation of BAD bacteria.
Post - Antibiotic Therapy
In today's world antibiotics are used like candy! the drug is prescribed to fight bacterial infections and it it can be very effective at doing so, however reduced levels of beneficial flora have been observed in people following antibiotic therapy.
Probiotic supplementation has been shown to be beneficial during and after antibiotic therapy.
I hope this short article has given you an insight into how probiotics can be a huge benefit but as always do yuor own research or contact an expert on this matter.
