What is Refeed Day?
Unlike cheat days, refeed day does not mean that you can stuff yourself with any kind of food until your heart is content, a refeed day involves calculated meals that are within your macronutrient intake.
Before we go on to understading refeeding we first need to establish what LEPTIN is??
Leptin comes from the Cytokine family and synthesized mostly by adipose tissue, also the brain and skeletal muscles. The key function of leptin in the body is to regulate energy regulation, energy expenditure and food intake.
If your leptin levels decrease, you will normally find yourself craving food and pains of hunger, reduced levels of leptin also signify slowing metabolism. So what this means is if you are on a low calorie diet for to long you will slow down your metabolism in an effort to survive on the low amount of fuel provided, which means if you trying to lose fat you might as well forget it!!!
Now that you know what leptin is and what it does to your body we can find out what refeeding really means.
When your leptin levels drop, the normal response would be to enhance so that slow metabolism and hunger can be avoided, since leptin is so responsive to glucose, you will benefit more if the calories you consume come from good sources of carbohydrates, which will then transform into glucose, this is how refeeding works, so on your refeed day you should consume more than your usual carbohydrate intake in order to synthesize leptin.
On top of Metabolism enhancement, refeeding also improves immune function, increases testoterone and growth hormone and reduces cortisol.
So from now on, consider this day as an important day to get yourself back on track if you trying to lose fat, do not just go out and have a blow out, THINK about it and execute correctly.
