The reason for this article
is because I told a client of mine he needed to take a week
off or at least have a deload week and he asked why.
I thought the HB Nation could really do with knowing why too, so here are my thoughts behind it:
If you are serious about building a great physique then rest is a MASSIVE part of it.
Your CNS (Central Nervous System) needs to be looked after, things like training, work,
relationships, environment, coffee and other stimulants are all a stress on the CNS, and
if you carry on adding to that stress your body will start fighting against you and all your
work in the gym will become unproductive!
How can we help ourselves recover??
1. When you embark on a training plan, make sure you schedule in different phases, this
could start with a phase where you doing 10 working sets per muscle group, you
then can phase up to 15 sets, once again from there you can phase up to 20 sets over
a few weeks but then come down in volume, either having a week off or a deload week.
This is just a very generic explanation but you must have proper periodisation in your
training.
2. Having a regular a blood flow massage and epsom salts bath every week will be a
massive help, I would recommend having a bath at least 3 x per week and try get a
massage when possible.
3. Supplementing with magnesium post workout and before bed will help massively.
4. Focus on getting a good night sleep, try to stop watching TV, being on a computer,
on the phone, ipad, anything that stimulates your brain at least 1 hour before bed.
Reading an autobiography can really help relax your mind.
5. Rhodiola is also a great herbal supplement to support against stress
6. Drinking water and staying hydrated is also key
Look after yourselves, life is to short to feel like crap!!
