Leaky Gut Syndrome

A conversation I had with a colleague of mine yesterday prompt me to write this article as I believe a LOT of people have this issue and I would like to bring it to light.

Leaky Gut Syndrome, what is it???

A possible cause of leaky gut is increased intestinal permeability or intestinal hyperpermeability.

This usually happens when tight junctions in the gut, which control what passes through the lining of the small intestine, don't work properly, which leads to substances leaking into the bloodstream.

What are the usual Symptoms of Leaky Gut?

  1. Bloating

  2. Gas

  3. Cramps

  4. Food Sensitivities

  5. Inflamed Skin such as acne

  6. Mood changes (depression)

  7. Hormonal Imbalances

  8. Candida Overgrowth

Now how can we look at fixing this issue?? Lets talk about the 3 R’s.

Remove – Replace – Reinoculate – Repair

  1. Remove:

The goal here is to remove the bad, get rid of the things that negatively affect the GI track, such inflammatory and toxic foods, as well as stress.

Things such as wheat, dairy, eggs, trans fats, processed foods, alcohol, caffeinated drinks and sugar.

  1. Replace:

Add the essential ingredients for proper digestion, such as Digestive Enzymes, Probiotics, L-Glutamine, and oregano. Increase foods such as Complex Carbohydrates, Fibre (not from wheat), vegetables, fruit, nuts and seeds, oily fish, whole grains and lots of water.

  1. Reinoculate:

Restore beneficial bacteria to reestablish a healthy balance of good bacteria.

  1. Repair:

It’s essential to provide the nutrients necessary to help the gut repair itself. L-glutamine is an amino acid that helps to rejuvenate the lining of the gut wall. If you still have symptoms after following the above recommendations, I would recommend doing a comprehensive stool test, so we can look further into it.
